Addressing heterogenous outcomes in uterine fibroids research: a call to action.

Abstract:

:Uterine fibroids are the most common benign pelvic tumors in women, with complications including heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, reproductive complications, and bulk-related symptoms. While the majority of uterine fibroids are asymptomatic, those suffering from symptoms can experience substantial burdens on quality of life and daily functioning. Comparative effectiveness reviews into available medical, surgical, and radiological treatments have found that a lack of high-quality data to inform treatment decisions is due, in part, to the use of heterogeneous outcomes and instruments in clinical studies. With multiple new interventions emerging, this call-to-action encourages the development and use of a core outcome set capturing the most relevant, patient-important outcomes in late phase and post-marketing therapeutic trials for uterine fibroids. The core outcome set should be developed by a diverse, multi-stakeholder group comprised of key health care decision-makers. Development and uptake of a core outcome set ensures that a consistent, collaboratively vetted set of outcomes will be accessible across different studies and promotes transparency for innovators seeking to anticipate the evidence needs of patients, providers, payers, regulators, and other stakeholders.

The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, “The Gray Journal”, covers the full spectrum of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The aim of the Journal is to publish original research (clinical and translational), reviews, opinions, video clips, podcasts and interviews that will have an impact on the understanding of health and disease and that has the potential to change the practice of women's health care. An important focus is the diagnosis, treatment, prediction and prevention of obstetrical and gynecological disorders. The Journal also publishes work on the biology of reproduction, and content which provides insight into the physiology and mechanisms of obstetrical and gynecological diseases.
